“Is it Trafficking? Examining Gender-Based Violence Among Racialized and Migrant Women in Precarious, Informal, and Non-Standard Labour.”

This research highlights a critical gap in how human trafficking is understood and addressed. Across sectors such as domestic work, agriculture, hospitality, and sex work, racialized and migrant women reported experiences of violence, coercion, and exploitation. Yet only some of these experiences are formally recognized as “human trafficking.”

This raises important questions for policy, funding, and service provision:

  • What determines whether harm is labeled as trafficking?
  • Who makes these decisions?
  • How do these distinctions shape access to support?

The webinar features a discussion of key findings, along with reflections from the research team and questions from participants.

Speakers:

  • Borislav Gerasimov, Research Lead, GAATW Canada
  • Julie Murray, Research Assistant, GAATW Canada
  • Alison Clancey, National Director, GAATW Canada
